From Big Bang to Big Data


After a long career in government research, private industry, and a startup initiative Fady A. Harfoush joined Loyola Quinlan School of Business as Lecturer and Director of the Financial Services & Business Analytics Lab. The FSBA Lab serves both the immediate needs for hands-on training in financial services and also the rapidly growing field of business analytics in various industry sectors besides finance such as marketing, healthcare, legal, insurance, risk management, government, and supply chain management. With the advent of ‘big data’, the new race and competitive edge for many companies is how to convert streaming data into actionable business insights—and do it fast. The challenges and opportunities are vast and continuously changing. Prior to joining Loyola, he served as Director of Data Warehouse and Applications Development for Thomson Reuters, a leading provider of multiple aggregated financial data. The role combined global virtual diverse teams’ management, and hands-on authentic leadership solving problems in data warehousing, data aggregation, advanced data analytics, quantification of intelligent information, and smart presentation techniques of large data. Fady is also the co-founder of Social Market Analytics, a global leader in predictive equities sentiment. SMA uses patented algorithms and analytics framework to distill the vast social media big data into actionable intelligence by providing the financial industry with near real-time sentiment analysis for powerful business insights.

Fady began his career at Fermi High Energy Physics Laboratory developing numerical techniques to simulate in 3-D complex particle accelerator problems. After a successful period of proven accomplishments that earned him recognition globally, he decided to transition to Wall Street. His new career quickly earned him credibility in the field. He has held numerous prominent roles at prestigious hedge fund firms, major financial institutions and leading financial data providers. His responsibilities included data analytics & visualization, large data aggregation, enterprise risk management, trading systems & technologies, modeling techniques, financial data, systems integration, and building from inception production ready turn-key solutions.

Fady earned his Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering with an emphasis in Applied Mathematics and 3-D numerical simulations from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. He completed his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Bo?aziçi University in Istanbul, Turkey. His publications appeared in leading scientific journals.

Fady speaks fluently four languages. He enjoys international travel and global multi-cultural engagements. His favorite retreat spot is somewhere along the Aegean sea on the Mediterranean.
